Today’s resource is not for you, the teachers who read AskCCIT. It’s for your students.
While searching for videos on reading strategies to offer my students, I recently came across a YouTube channel by Thomas Frank, creator of College Info Geek, a website that promises to help students “Be awesome at college”. Okay, I lied. Today’s resource isn’t just for your students. It’s for teachers as well. Really, it’s for anyone who wants to be more productive, find more leisure time, and organize their life more effectively.
Frank blogs and shoots videos about how to hack college, but his content also focuses on eliminating distractions, scheduling time for fun, and mustering the grit needed to complete creative tasks. This is stuff that everyone can benefit from. After watching a few of his videos (all of which are short and accessible), I’ve already found myself to be more productive. His simple process of scheduling your day every morning (I know it’s not groundbreaking advice) has helped me realize how quickly I can get through my email if I just put it on the calendar.
Frank also introduced me to HabitRPG, an app that makes life more like a video game by rewarding players with gold and XP for building good habits, breaking bad ones, and checking items off of their to-do lists. (I’ve already racked up almost 30 gold, and I should hit level 2 by the end of the day!) In fact, were it not for HabitRPG, I probably wouldn’t have completed this post on time. I’m only drafting it right now because I know I’m booked for the rest of the day, and if I don’t get it done, my character will lose some health and miss out on valuable rewards.
If you are interested in hacking your life, or if you want to help your students do so, I recommend starting with this first video in Thomas Frank’s series on Productivity, Habits, and Defeating Procrastination:
