Finding time for Formative Assessment

A few weeks ago, I shared this post about the values of formative assessment, a topic of increasing interest to me as I continue to research high-impact practices to increase student success. In the following video, thirty-four year veteran educator and nationally recognized presenter and author Rick Wormeli discusses the importance of formative assessment in the learning process. He argues that the most important aspect of formative assessment is the feedback that it evokes from the teacher. Without that feedback, students can’t learn.

It’s a convincing argument, to me at least. But it’s hard to actually find the time to give that high quality immediate feedback that students need. Does anyone else struggle with the same issue? What could we change to build formative assessment in as a more regular part of our courses?
